PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
OFFICIAL LABOUR PARTY EDUCATION POLICY AND THE HON MEMBER FOR SEDGEFIELD (20 June 1994)

That this House welcomes the interest shown by the honourable Member for Sedgefield in sending a member of his family to a grant maintained school; notes that the Oratory RC School in Fulham was one of the first to opt out of local authority control in 1989; further notes the clear statement of official Labour Party policy by the honourable Member for Dewsbury at the 1992 Labour Party Conference that 'We oppose opt-out in principle because it is wrong. It is wrong in principle to set school against school. It is wrong in principle to introduce selection by the back door. It is wrong in principle for a group of parents to be able to hijack a school'; and congratulates the honourable Member for Sedgefield for displaying courage in placing the interests of his family's education over the narrow-minded dogma of Labour's education policy.
