PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CONTRACTS FOR UK COAL (4 November 1992)
Motion Details
That this House notes with grave concern that the new independent gas-fired plant generates electricity at a considerably higher cost than the existing coal-fired plant that it now threatens to replace and, therefore, calls on Her Majesty's Government to intervene and guarantee that the new coal contracts currently under negotiation between British Coal and the generators are for a take of no less than 65 million tonnes of coal from United Kingdom deep mines, thus safeguarding a strategic energy resource and ensuring the social and economic structure of the mining economy is secured in face of the irrational 'dash for gas'.
