PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
STANDARD SPENDING ASSESSMENTS FOR WEBBER CRAIG AUTHORITIES AND SHEFFIELD (3 November 1992)

Motion Details

That this House condemns the inadequacy and arbitrary nature of the Government's standard spending assessments for local authorities, in particular the completely unfair assessments provided for the Webber Craig Authorities, namely Barnsley, Rotherham, Wakefield, Doncaster, St. Helens and Wigan together with Sheffield, which condemn the residents of these areas to low levels of essential services and to a less than fair share of the total grant to local government; and calls upon the Government to recognise the academic evidence exposing the failings of the system, to provide as a result improved standard spending assessments for the seven authorities in question and to abandon the use of standard spending assessments in determining their arbitrary capping limits.
