PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
WATER PRIVATISATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND AND SCOTLAND (20 April 1993)

Motion Details

That this House welcomes the statement by the Minister of State for Northern Ireland, the honourable Member for Hampshire East, that for 'technical reasons' it will not be possible to privatise the water industry in Northern Ireland during the lifetime of this Parliament; notes with dismay that while 'technical reasons' can cause Her Majesty's Government to make a U-turn on a major matter of policy in Northern Ireland no such similar U-turn is proposed as a response to public opinion in Scotland which remains adamantly opposed to the privatisation of Scottish water; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Scotland to demonstrate his respect for the expressed views of the Scottish people and to abandon all plans for removing the water supply industry from the public sector.
