PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
RESEARCH INTO OVARIAN CANCER (19 April 1993)

That this House is appalled to learn that whilst more than 10 women die every day from ovarian cancer, most research aimed at detecting and treating this disease has to be funded by charities and private organisations due to lack of public funding; notes research showing that early detection of ovarian cancer can increase the rate of survival of sufferers from 25 per cent. to 90 per cent; further notes that the Imperial Cancer Research Fund has stated that the high death rate from ovarian cancer is mainly because of late detection; applauds the efforts of the recently established charity, Research into Ovarian Cancer, in raising awareness of the silent killer ovarian cancer; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to provide adequate funding for research into the prevention of ovarian cancer and a comprehensive screening programme for women with a family history of ovarian cancer and other at-risk groups, rather than leaving future research and screening programmes to charity.
