PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
TRADE IN MEDICAL RECORDS AND DAILY MAIL INVESTIGATION (26 May 2015)

Motion Details

That this House views with the gravest of concerns the recent revelations by the Daily Mail's Investigation Unit of the trade in personal data, particularly health records; notes that the medical records of thousands of people, including details on sick and disabled individuals, are being secretly sold on for as little as 19 pence, with apparently no checks on cold callers and fraudsters who are often looking to target the most vulnerable; further notes that Pharmacy2U, an online prescription service, which is the country's leading NHS approved online pharmacy, has sold patients' information to marketing companies without their knowledge; welcomes the announcement by the Office of Information Commissioner of an in-depth investigation; and calls again on the Secretary of State for Health to review the safeguards in place for the re-launch of care.data, the Government's flagship patient record sharing scheme, in light of NHS England's repeated but unconvincing assurances that no leakage of medical data is possible.
