TREATMENT OF WOMEN IN GUJARAT (16 April 2002)
Motion Details
That this House notes the report produced by a women's panel in India called 'How the Gujarat massacre affected minority women. The survivors speak'; also notes their conclusion that many Muslim women suffered the worst forms of sexual violence, including gang rape, and that many were burned alive; further notes the allegations that police refused to file complaints by the victims and that many women have been denied justice; condemns those who committed these crimes; calls upon the Indian Government to bring those responsible to justice; recognises that India is the largest recipient of UK bilateral aid; and calls upon the British Government to make representations to the Government of India regarding the violence against women in Gujarat state.
