East Midlands Motor Services Ltd (21 December 1989)
Motion Details
That this House totally condemns the chairman of the company Stagecoach Holdings, Mr Brian Souter, who has launched a vicious attack upon the employees of the East Midlands Motor Services, based in the North Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire areas, covering the towns of Mansfield, Chesterfield, Shirebrook, Worksop, Harworth, Retford, Clowne, etc.; draws attention to Mr Souter's drafting in of approximately 80 drivers from as far away as Perth in Scotland and elsewhere, in order to try and smash the trades union organisation in the company; is appalled that already management of the company have sacked a number of union shop stewards without due cause; demands the immediate reinstatement of the workers affected; and calls for the company's management to meet with the workforce with a view to stopping such cowboy activities, which can only result in the lowering of standards of bus services in the areas concerned and place in jeopardy the safety of staff and the travelling public in general.
