PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Democracy in Chile (18 December 1989)
Motion Details
That this House warmly welcomes the return of Chile to the community of free and democratic nations of which it was a member for 150 years until September 1973; congratulates the people of Chile whose sacrifice, love of peace and belief in democracy made this new beginning possible; expresses its supports and that of the British people for the newly President, Mr Patricio Aylwin, in the difficult years ahead, in which democracy, social justice and sound and stable economic prosperity will have to be patiently built; congratulates also the United Democratic Opposition of Chile for their historic victory, which is the result of tolerance, goodwill and patriotism, and hopes that such feelings, which will be most needed in office, will persist; calls upon the United Kingdom's partners in the European Community to consider a special package of economic, financial, technological and political measures aimed at strengthening the Chilean economy and its democratic institutions; also calls for special international measures to discourage both military interference in affairs of civilian life in Chile and Latin America; and shares the hope and joy of the Chilean people and pays homage to all those who through the sacrifice of their lives played such a significant part in bringing to Chile these new days of freedom and hope.
