PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
MULTILATERAL REDUCTIONS IN NUCLEAR WEAPONS (22 January 1998)
Motion Details
That this House notes the recent Gallup opinion poll commissioned by the Nuclear Free Local Authorities which shows that 87 per cent of the British people want the Government to help negotiate a global treaty to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons; strongly endorses the unanimous opinion of the International Court of Justice that there exists an obligation to pursue in good faith, and bring to a conclusion, negotiations leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects under strict and effective international control; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to respond to public opinion and the United Kingdom's international legal obligations by promoting further confidence building measures between nations such as a policy of no first use of nuclear weapons and by placing its full political and diplomatic weight behind the global campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons at every available opportunity and in every appropriate forum.
