PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
KYOTO CONFERENCE AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE 0F EXXON (1 December 1997)

Motion Details

That this House, noting that the Third Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held in December in Kyoto, Japan; further welcomes the efforts of the government to reach agreement at Kyoto on legally binding reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases; further welcomes statements made by both the Chief Executive of British Petroleum and the Chief Executive of Shell UK Ltd which recognise that the time for precautionary action to prevent climate change has arrived; deplores statements made by the Chief Executive of Exxon at the World Petroleum Congress in Beijing on 13th October calling on governments in Asia to work against any agreement at Kyoto; and calls on the Government to promote measures to tackle climate change as a boost to jobs and the economy rather than a sacrifice, as set out in the latest report by the Institute for International Energy Conservation, entitled, The Potential for Sustainable Energy in the UK.
