Lerwick: houses in Holmsgarth
Looking landward from the Northlink ferry just before it departs for Aberdeen on a sunny evening. This terrace of houses runs up the hill between Holmsgarth Road and North Road and the pitch of the roof catches the evening sun, as does a large roof of a unit in South Gremista Industrial Estate, in the distance.

Common Ivy (Hedera helix), Lerwick
Ivy is not native to Shetland, but is quite commonly planted. This rather variegated specimen is growing on a cliff beside the Shetland Hotel.

The Shetland Hotel, Lerwick
Brutalist 70s architecture. The Shetland Hotel was built opposite the newly-built Holmsgarth ferry terminal during the height of the 1970s oil boom.

Retail side of Jamieson and Smith
Jamieson and Smith sell a wide range of wool, tops, rovings, fleeces and other necessities for the spinner. They also sell finished garments in local wool. This is just one hanger display.

Inside Jamieson and Smith
Jamieson and Smith are Shetland's leading wool brokers dealing with over 80% of the fleeces from the islands. Part of the premises is where the fleeces are sorted for quality and colour. Next door is a shop selling wool and woollen products entered by the front of Image Knitting patterns, knitted garments, wool, Fair Isle sweaters and carpets made from Shetland wool are all to be found here.

Welcome to Shetland Drive on the left
Is this the UK's only Faroese road sign? Sadly the Faroese ferry NORRONA no longer calls at Lerwick but on a clear day in summer she can be seen passing close to the north end of Unst on a Sunday evening.

Shetland fleece at Jamieson and Smith, Wool Brokers
During Shetland Wool Week, Jamieson and Smith receive a high number of visitors, my wife included. She purchased the fleeces of three distinct sheep one of which was white superfine. In the basement you can select just the fleece "that seems to have your name on it".
