Shetland flag flying on the Amenity Trust building, Lerwick
The Shetland flag was designed by Roy Grønneberg and Bill Adams in 1969 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the transfer of the islands from Norway to Scotland. The flag was not formally granted by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the heraldic authority of Scotland, until 2005, in time for the Island Games in the islands that year. The flag depicts an offset cross, known as a Scandinavia or Nordic cross on a blue field; the blue and white represent Scotland and the cross celebrates Shetland's Scandinavian heritage.
