The former Gilbert Bain Hospital, now Goudies Funeral Directors, Lerwick
The plaque on the side of the building reads
'Gilbert Bain Hospital
Gifted to Lerwick in memory of Gilbert Bain
By his sisters Enga and Isabella
1901'
Although no longer housed in this building, the current Shetland hospital, opened in 1960, is still named the Gilbert Bain Hospital.
There is something slightly macabre about a former hospital currently housing a funeral directors.
Gilbert Bain was born in Lerwick on April 29th 1809, died in Edinburgh on March 23rd 1886 and spent his working life in India and Singapore, where he made his fortune. He was unmarried and his sisters inherited his estate.

Lerwick: postbox № ZE1 52, Scalloway Road
This George V-reign postbox is set into the perimeter wall of 16 Scalloway Road. Like all postboxes in Lerwick, there are two weekday 'final collection' times, one for off-islands next-day delivery (11:30am) and one for Shetland items (5:15pm). The single advertised Saturday collection is 3:15pm.
