A close-up of the plaque on a building which I thought I'd actually taken a picture of, but find that I didn't! It is, though, in the background of this picture: Image

Anderson Homes, Lerwick
Arthur Anderson (1792-1868) was a businessman and Liberal politician. He founded these almshouses, for fisherman's and other sailor's widows and funded it in memory of his wife. They were opened in 1865 and called "The Widows' Asylum", this soon became "The Widows Homes" and when they were taken over by Lerwick Town Council in 1971 they were renamed again as "The Anderson Homes". The Council refurbished them and they still fulfil their original function.

Anderson Homes, Twageos Road
Category C listed building (LB37278 http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB37278 Historic Scotland) opened in 1865 as a home for widows of fishermen and sailors and, although run by the local council since 1971, they still perform the same function. Part of the listing text tells us: "the original name of the Anderson Homes was the Widows' Asylum. It was erected at the instigation of Arthur Anderson (1792-1867), co-founder of the Peninsular & Orient* Shipping Line, in memory of his wife, and (the homes) were originally intended for the widows of seamen. The homes were erected about the same time as the Anderson Educational Institute, and are important in their own right being representative of a type of building which is becoming increasingly rare - the philanthropic almshouse. As with the Institute, it provides a dramatic feature at the southern approach to the harbour, although its impact has been reduced by the loss of the central fleche and several chimneys". See Image] *Peninsular & Orient (Steam Navigation Company) is now better known as simply P&O.
