Waiting for the 'Right Away'
Class 40, 40147 waits in the northbound platform at Selby. On departing the train will cross the famous Selby Swing Bridge, with its operators cabin above the tracks, over the River Ouse. Originally on the East Coast mainline, Selby station was bypassed in 1983 by a new railway line funded by the National Coal Board (NCB). The NCB wished to exploit the Selby Coalfield which placed the existing route at risk of subsidence. It was a blessing for the railway as it removed the severely speed restricted swing bridge and the sharp curve to the north of the station from the East Coast route giving significant time savings. The 'fast lines' through the station were subsequently removed. Selby still has direct services to London but travellers going to Newcastle or Edinburgh will have to change.

Yorkshire's first railway station, Selby
This train shed was designed by James Walker and George Smith and built by Atack and Boothman in 1834 as the terminus of the Leeds and Selby Railway. It was replaced in 1840 by one on the site of the current station when the Hull and Selby Railway opened. This station was then relegated to goods use only with the lines extending to the River Ouse just over the road to the left. This is an important early survivor.
