A corner of the caravan park
On the eastern edge of Slingsby is a caravan and camping park set in a shallow bowl. The OS map says 'pit [dis]', which makes one wonder what sort of pit it was. Old 6" maps indicate that it was a sand pit, which contrasts with the disused quarry just 400m away on the south side of the B1257 which would have been a source of limestone. It must be the case that the sand pit was a result of glacial deposition, rather like the sandy areas close by the A64 around Sherburn.
