Notice at York Youth Hostel
This notice on the wall of York Youth Hostel used to be a common sight at Youth Hostels in England and Wales. It has the following wording: THIS YOUTH HOSTEL IS ONE OF MANY, BOTH IN THIS COUNTRY AND ABROAD, WHERE YOUNG PEOPLE, REGARDLESS OF RACE OR CREED, MAY SPEND THE NIGHT. THE BUILDINGS ARE DIVERSE IN CHARACTER BUT THEY HAVE A COMMON PURPOSE: TO HELP ALL, ESPECIALLY YOUNG PEOPLE OF LIMITED MEANS, TO A GREATER KNOWLEDGE, LOVE AND CARE OF THE COUNTRYSIDE. Y. H. A. NATIONAL OFFICE, TREVELYAN HOUSE, ST. ALBANS, HERTS. In 2002, the YHA National Office moved to Matlock, Derbyshire. Trevelyan House was named after Professor G. M. Trevelyan OM (1876-1962) historian and academic, who was the first President of the Youth Hostels Association (England & Wales) between 1930 and 1951.

East side of York Youth Hostel
This Victorian mansion opened as a youth hostel in 1945 replacing the former YH at Trenfield in Holgate Road (SE5851). It now provides 195 beds plus meals and self-catering facilities. The YHA green triangle can be seen on a building to the right of the photo.

York youth hostel
I first stayed here in 1983 and this was my fourth visit. Since the last time about ten years ago, this fully glazed extension has been added to the front of the old house that forms the heart of the hostel.

YHA Youth hostel at York
When I visit a town or city I sometimes utilise the YHA youth hostel network for great accommodation - if this place were a hotel it could charge maybe £100 plus per night - a hostel charged me £53 for 3 people to share a private family room. Sure, you have to cook your own dinner (there IS a restaurant here but if you're saving skip it) but I love the no frills, communal vibe of the self-catering kitchen, which we shared with two Japanese travellers and a family from Lancs.
