Evening Star at the National Railway Museum, York
The last steam locomotive built by British Railways in Swindon works in 1960 and now exhibited here when not at another museum or out on the rails. She was earmarked for preservation from inception, to be held as part of the National Collection, commemorating the 'age of steam' before the changeover to diesel trains by the mid 1960's. I had a Hornby catalogue as a boy with this train on the cover (as painted by Terence Cuneo, if I recall correctly).

Flying Scotsman
On the turntable at the National Railway Museum, York, following extensive restoration. Seen here in LNER Wartime Black livery, which I suspect means they hadn't put the top coat on yet.

National Railway Museum - C1
This is O V S Bulleid's WWII austerity Q class named using the continental notation system as C1 or using the more familiar system it is an 0-6-0 tender engine. It's a 'Marmite' engine and my impression as a youth was that it was wretchedly ugly but now it's grown on me and I appreciate the elegance of Bulleid's stripped down design. My steam interest started with stationary steam where there is more readily apparent variety but I have come to enjoy the quirkier aspects of locomotive steam and would recommend the technical works by David Wardale and Chapelon.
