York Interiors : The Operations Room, York Cold War Bunker
The Cold War bunker, just off Acomb Road in York, was headquarters of the Royal Observer Corps No.20 Group. It was opened in 1961. One of 31 such bunkers, it was part of a nationwide network of semi-secret posts manned and primed specifically to observe and monitor a nuclear attack on the United Kingdom. The bunker was stood down in September 1991 and closed on the 31st March 1992. It remained empty until it was acquired by English Heritage in 2000, scheduled, restored and opened to the public.
