No.20 Group Royal Observer Corps HQ: York cold war bunker
This semi-subterranean cold war bunker would have monitored nuclear explosions and fallout in the Yorkshire region. The installation was opened in 1961 and was decommissioned in 1992. Much of the bunker is actually above ground and it is doubtful if it would have withstood a nuclear attack. The bunker was located in the grounds of Shelley House, Acomb Road. Shelley House was recently replaced by a block of flats, with the address Monument Close.

York Townscape : York Cold War Bunker, Monument Close, York
The Cold War bunker, just off Acomb Road in York, was headquarters of the Royal Observer Corps No.20 Group. It was opened in 1961. One of 31 such bunkers, it was part of a nationwide network of semi-secret posts manned and primed specifically to observe and monitor a nuclear attack on the United Kingdom.
The bunker was stood down in September 1991 and closed on the 31st March 1992. It remained empty until it was acquired by English Heritage in 2000, scheduled, restored and opened to the public.
