Bishopthorpe
Looking east-northeast along Main Street towards Bishopthorpe post office and The Marcia pub. Originally called Thorpe St Andrew, the village was bought by Archbishop of York Walter De Grey in 1230 who rebuilt the manor house on the west bank of the River Ouse as Bishopthorpe Palace, which is still the official residence of the Archbishop of York. It is also said by some that Bishopthorpe was the birthplace of a certain Mr Guy Fawkes, although there is no real evidence for this apart from oral tradition.
