Recent burials in Whitby cemetery
Burials seem to have started at the western (Larpool Lane) end of the cemetery in the 19th century, and by the early 21st century had nearly reached the eastern end at Helredale Road.

War memorial in Whitby cemetery (detail)
On most war memorials the emphasis is on the army casualties, with seamen and airmen perhaps only representing a minority of the names. Whitby being a seafaring town, it is not surprising that this is reversed, with its dedication to "the honoured memory of those sailors and soldiers who gave their lives..." For context see Image

WW1 Memorial
Located in Larpool Lane cemetery, I initially wondered what the significance of the wires were for on top of the cross, then realised they prevent birds from perching and soiling the memorial.
