Toll house, built on the order of an Indian Maharajah
In 1858 Duleep Singh leased nearby Mulgrave Castle from Lord Normanby. He exercised his elephants on the beach at Sandsend but eventually decided to build a road for them, the first road between Whitby and Sandsend. He also constructed a toll house in order to collect a small charge from others wishing to use this road. The toll house still stands and is today used as holiday accommodation. The extension looks to be of a later date. See also http://www.duleepsingh.com/News.aspx?Id=28
