Whitby Harbour from the harbour bridge
This view is of the outer harbour, looking north and is taken from the harbour bridge. The harbour entrance, between the East and West Piers, is very narrow and cannot be seen from this angle. The harbour bridge used to carry the A174 coast road through the town centre across the River Esk until the River Esk was bridged further upstream to eliminate through traffic through the narrow streets of the town centre and to minimise disruption when the bridge had to be raised for access to and egress from the inner harbour.
