Looking towards the Western side of Whitby
The town of Whitby is arranged along both banks of the River Esk, as it makes the final part of the journey to the North Sea.
Standing on the eastern part of town, this looks across to the west which makes up the greater percentage of the community.

The church dates back to 1770. The current church was built in 1867, at a cost of £4,663. It is a Victorian gothic style building, made with local Aislaby stone. Its spire stands at 120 feet tall and is said to be used by trawlermen as a marker when approaching the harbour.
