Benches in the Alice garden, Cliff Street, Whitby
These were presumably fabricated by the same person as others in the area such as this one at Sleights Image The nearer one represents the 'caucus race'. Lewis Carroll, the author of the Alice stories, is known to have visited Whitby several times and some people have identified possible local inspiration for some of the scenes.

Entrance to the Alice garden, Cliff Street, Whitby
The garden has been created on the site of the former Cliff Street girls' primary school, which opened in 1893 and closed in 1963, but I have not found reference to when it was demolished. Lewis Carroll, the author of the Alice stories, is known to have visited Whitby several times and some people have identified possible local inspiration for some of the scenes.

View from Whitby bridge
Looking along Pier Road, on the west bank of the River Esk. There are boat trips and fishing trips, inevitably, and just seen in the distance is The Magpie Cafe, 'the best fish and chips in Whitby' according to many reports.
