York's first cinema, now a shop, occupied at the time as a furniture showroom by MacDonald's.

Merchants Hall coat of arms
Situated in Fossgate on the wall of the gatehouse to the Merchant Adventurers Hall, the elaborate coat of arms appear to be a copy of the original and dates from 1854.

A street of specialist shops, restaurants etc. On the left of the street can be seen a range of building styles with a jettied timber framed building of about 1600 near the centre of the photo. beyond can be seen the ornate arched entrance to the former Electric Theatre, which was York's first purpose built cinema.
