Beacon Hill - Pickering
Beacon Hill is a mainly natural mound. On the top, a 4m high ringwork, 30m across, was erected as a siegework to threaten the nearby Pickering Castle during the anarchy of the 1140's under King Stephen.
Pickering Castle was founded by William I during his campaign of 1069-70 in northern England. It was always owned by the King due to the nearby hunting Forest.
