Old well head, Cropton
The former well, now capped, near the northern end of Cropton village street. Like other villages on the limestone Tabular Hills, Cropton suffered from a lack of running water. Some villages further west on the limestone plateau such as Carlton, Fadmoor and Gillamoor had water supplied via an ingenious system of channels constructed in the 18th century by Joseph Foord, but here an exceedingly deep well was dug to reach water. The actual depth varies between 216ft and 300ft, depending on which account one reads, whilst the well was in use until 1899 when a piped supply was introduced thanks to Squire Gill.

Inscription over cottage doorway in Cropton
Inscriptions like this are not uncommon in Yorkshire and they often show the initials of the first owner, and possibly the owner's wife. In this case the initials 'NC' are for Nicholas Cheeseman, but what is unusual is the rest of the inscription which is 'Memento Mori' - Remember you must die. A rather sombre greeting for anyone crossing the threshold.

Old cast iron water hydrant, Cropton
A remnant of Cropton's first piped water supply dating from circa 1899, thanks to work paid for by Squire John Gill. Previous to this date the village relied on water brought up from a very deep well situated nearby. The cast iron columns are inscribed with the manufacturer's name.....BLAKEBOROUGH & SONS, MANUFACTURERS, BRIGHOUSE, ENGLAND.

Road junction in Cropton
This photograph shows a view of a road junction at the northern end of Cropton. The road on the right comes into the village from High Lane while that on the left joins the main road from the church near Cropton Banks. The picture was taken looking in a northerly direction towards Spiers House.
