A fine Renaissance composition by Edward Taylor, 1879, restored in the 1950s after war damage. Grade II listed.
The banners concerned an expansion of the gallery.

Commemorative Plaque for Princess Margaret (Tudor) on St Marys Abbey Wall
It seems strange to commemorate the passage of Margaret Tudor through York by knocking a hole in the walls of St Marys Abbey which date from 1260. Margaret Tudor (1489 - 1541) was the daughter of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. She was married to James IV of Scotland in 1503 although the ceremony took place in his absence at Richmond Palace with Patrick, Earl of Bothwell standing in. There was then a grand journey north involving a stop at York where the walls were breached. This plaque commemorates that event. The breach now accommodates St Leonards Place.
