An interesting gateway on Yorkersgate
This rather fancy 18th century gateway looks out of place here, and this is probably a correct assumption as it was almost certainly moved at some point in the 19thC - but from where? The gateway is almost opposite the Talbot Hotel and is thought to have been erected here to give guests access to the newly constructed stable yard [now a food court] on the other side of the road. It has been suggested that the design was by Vanbrugh, but there is no proof of this at present.

Vanbrugh Gateway, Yorkersgate
The nearby Talbot Hotel was built as a hunting lodge in the late 17th century and this rusticated gateway led to the stables. It is close to the site of the old town wall.

Or York Road or the B1248, heading towards the main town crossroads. The large building is the Talbot Hotel, undergoing refurbishment and due to reopen in 2012.
