North Beck Drain, Sea Cut
A man-made channel built by Sir George Cayley between 1800 and 1810 to provide a quick outflow for the River Derwent to the North Sea thereby providing flood relief downstream. The water would otherwise take a very long and tortuous route south to discharge into the River Humber.
Sir George Cayley was an interesting character. Squire of Brompton and an engineer, in 1853 he designed and built the first human carrying glider. If a suitable engine was available at the time he could have beaten the Wright brothers by fifty years.
