Great white hope or great white elephant?
These apartments are the first phase of the 'Sands' project to transform this corner of Scarborough's North Bay and, it is hoped, the resort as a whole. Critics question whether the scheme is either desirable or necessary - or will ever be fully completed.

Yorkshire Water at work in Scarborough
Between 2011 and 2014 Yorkshire Water will be investing more than £50 million to improve waste water pumping, storage and treatment facilities in Scarborough, to meet the requirements of the European revised Bathing Water Directive. The work will reduce the chance of untreated water entering the sea during times of heavy rainfall. The aim is to secure the highest standards of bathing water quality for the town - helping make both Scarborough North Bay and South Bay eligible for Blue Flags in the future.

North Bay and 'The Sands' development
The photograph, taken from the Royal Albert Drive, shows the North Bay and 'The Sands' development. 'The Sands' replaced what was once an attractive Art Deco building that housed the Corner Café amongst other sea-side holiday enterprises. The pyramid shaped buildings in the right distance belong to the Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary Image] at Scalby Mills. - - - See also these photographs by: J Thomas: Image, Martin Dawes: Image, David Pickersgill: Image, Steve F: Image and Phil Catterall: Image
