Chillington Hall - Courtyard Room (detail)
The plaster motifs illustrate the tale of the Giffard panther emblem. Sir John Giffard in the reign of Henry VIII shot dead with a bow and arrow a panther as it was about to pounce on a woman and child. The animal had escaped from his menagerie! The motto translates as 'Take breath, pull strong'.

Chillington Hall - Courtyard Room
Well lit room in former courtyard to the original Tudor House. The plaster motifs illustrate the tale of the Giffard panther emblem. Sir John Giffard in the reign of Henry VIII shot dead with a bow and arrow a panther as it was about to pounce on a woman and child. The animal had escaped from his menagerie!

Chillington Hall was built in two stages, the south facing window on the left was built in 1724 to a design by Francis Smith of Warwick, the east front with the columns and portico was built 1786-89 by Sir John Soane. Chillington Hall - Front
The front and north wings were added by Thomas Giffard to a design by John Soane in 1786-9 and incorporating the south wing built in 1724. Ceiling heights are much higher in the newer wings following the fashion of the time and appear rather austere to modern taste.
