Lock No. 17
Elegant iron railings protect the users of the bridge at the tail of this lock on the Wolverhampton flight of locks. The functional simplicity of the canal environment is enhanced by the modern habit of painting everything black and white, so Gwion is almost camouflaged here!

Paddle Gear, Wolverhampton Lock No 17
A windlass is used on the left to wind up (or down) the gate paddles when operating the lock, just as it was in 1772 when the canal opened. However, the square box with the notice is an anti-vandal device fitted in the 1990s to prevent idiots emptying the water out of the lock, and the pound above, thus closing down the whole canal. Boat crews require a special key to release the vertical rod, thus allowing the paddle shaft to rotate.

Lock 17
One of a flight of locks leading down from Wolverhampton to Aldersley Junction. The hotel and racecourse grandstand can be seen on the left. Once a jumping track the racecourse now provides floodlit all-weather racing.
