Birchwood Road and building site, Penn, Wolverhampton
In the foreground is some of the brick rubble left from the demolition of the Battle of Britain public house in April 2008. Sandrigham Road joins Birchwood Road opposite the white house with the new car port and garage, on the right of the image. Until the 1980s this house was a small grocer and convenience shop. edit: Housing has been built on this site in 2011/2012

Birchwood Road and building site, Penn, Wolverhampton
Looking across the derelict site of the former Battle of Britain public house, demolished during April 2008. The house in the centre (with the new carport and garage) was, until the 1980s a small convenience store.

The Battle of Britain, Birchwood Road, Penn
Formerly a popular local pub built in the 1960s, closed for good in mid-2006. The housing within a 200m radius includes buildings of various ages dating from the early 20th century, through to the 1980s; terraces, semi-detached, and detached in style. Planning for 9 apartments has been applied for. I will re-photograph this site in a year or so! Here it is:please see Image] and other images.

The ex Battle of Britain 5, Penn, Wolverhampton
Only a pile of bricks remains for clearance now. The building of four or five four bedroomed houses with double garages seems to be the favoured replacement, as the idea of eleven(?) apartments was refused planning permission.

Midland Hawthorn blossom
While nearby Buckingham Road has standard issue pink flowering cherry trees planted in the (often ruined by thoughtless parking) grass verges, in Westminster Avenue and here at the north end of Sandringham Road red flowering Midland Hawthorn trees are well established. Could these be the cultivar "Paul's Scarlet" often seen in parks and gardens? update 2 Nov 2013: I noticed that all three trees here in Sandringham Road had very stunted growth during July, and appeared to be dying. By the last week in October 2013 these had been felled. Strange how all three died the same year.

Where's my pint?
The demolition of the Battle of Britain public house in Birchwood Road, Penn, has taken about five days. This worker, searching for the bar and his drink, has just about given up hope.
