Wyrley Common Bridge, February 1985
Looking towards Pelsall on the Wyrley and Essington Canal (Cannock Extension) on a freezing day in February 1985. The bridge used to carry a mineral railway connecting Brownhills Colliery, Grove Pit to the former Norton branch of the London and North Western Railway.

The Cannock Extension Canal was built in 1863 to transport coal from the collieries in Cannock and Hednesford.

Canal Basins on the Cannock Extension Canal
The basins served the adjacent Wyrley Grove Colliery where two shafts were sunk in 1852-3 to exploit a series of 3' to 6' seams at up to 387' (118m) depth. The colliery was closed in 1950 soon after the nationalisation of the mines in 1947.

Canal side warehouse near Pelsall Road Bridge.
Industrial building on the Wyrley and Essington (Cannock Extension) Canal. This location was near to the Pelsall Road Bridge. There were various buildings and wharfs at this location and it was also once served by a mineral railway.
