Built 1873 by Jonah & George Davies of Tipton. Preserved in the middle of a new housing estate. It is currently being worked on by Lichfield Waterworks Trust and can be visited on Friday mornings when there is a working party present. Visitors are welcome.

Seen in 1984 when still in the care of the water company. It was subsequently closed and sold off for development but the engine house has been retained and is being cared for by Lichfield Waterworks Trust. The engine was built in 1873 by Jonah and George Davies of Tipton. This shows the 'working gear' in front of the 65" bore cylinder.

Sandfields is home to a Cornish beam pumping engine built in 1873 and preserved since about 1924. It is currently being restored by Lichfield Waterworks Trust and can be visited on Friday mornings. This is the lowest level of the engine house and just on the cylinder side of the beam centre. This is the circulating pump. This is a bucket pump worked from the beam and returning water from the condenser tank to the canal from whence it had come. The returning water is warmer as it has cooled the surface condenser and recovered the latent heat from the steam being condensed. The volunteers are currently trying to free up the pump bucket - no easy task after sitting in water for 96 years or so.

A view in 1984 when the waterworks was still active and owned by the South Staffordshire Waterworks company The waterworks closed some years ago and the building is now the property of Persimmon Homes but the Lichfield Waterworks Trust has access to the buildings and is restoring the 1873 built Cornish beam pumping engine. It was built by Jonah & George Davies of Tipton and the cylinder is 65" bore by 9' stroke. It was the fourth engine on site and ceased work in 1924. This is the pump end of the beam which is resting in the 'outdoor' position. It is a twin flitch cast iron beam with wrought iron catch wings. A manual winch is fitted at this end of the beam floor for maintenance.

Part of the parallel motion is visible with the piston rod cap. The curved metal guards were to prevent the staff coming into contact with the catch wings that protect the engine in the event of an over-stroke.
