Prince Rupert's Mound overlooking Lichfield Cathedral. It was from here that Prince Rupert laid siege on a Lichfield which had recently been captured by the Parliamentarian forces. From this slightly elevated located cannon were used on the walls and Cathedral Close. The Royalist ousted the Parliamentarian defenders with the use of local miners who were used to undermine the defensive wall and breaching it with gunpowder. The cannon bombarbment did significant damage to the cathedral bringing down the central spire. This spot is now the beer garden of the George and Dragon pub.

The Palace in Cathedral Close, overlooking Lichfield Cathedral. The house was built in 1687, described as Queen Anne-style, though built fifteen years before she came to the throne. The house was home to Barrister, Gilbert Walmsley, friend of Samuel Johnson and David Garrick, and later to poet, Anna Seward. From 1860 it was home to the Bishops of Lichfield, and from 1954 it has been part of Lichfield Cathedral School.

An excellent late C17th house, something which may be attributable to the involvement of one of Christopher Wren's masons, Edward Pierce. The pediment has a carved shield flanked by garlands. For once, the Georgians didn't replace the original casement windows with sashes. Built c1687-88. Grade I listed. The bishops found alternative accommodation in 1953 and this is now occupied by Lichfield Cathedral School.

Well to be honest I don't know whether either part of that title is correct - but it looks like a garage - or perhaps originally a coach house, and the half-timbering at the top looks Tudor or Jacobean. Whatever it is, it's a rather charming little building sandwiched between Image] and Image] in the Close at Lichfield.

This plaque is in the entrance of the George and Dragon Inn on Beacon Street in Lichfield. During the second siege of Lichfield Prince Rupert attacked with cannon from what is now the beer garden behind this pub.
