The Edinburgh Dome, Malvern St. James Girls College
A remarkable building built in 1977 by inflating a circular membrane over which multiple springs were attached to points around the edge of the circle. Before inflation a special concrete mixture was poured. The pressure was kept up until the concrete had set. Around the base there is a moat to allow sunlight to reflect up into the dome. Opened by the Duke of Edinburgh. The building has been plagued with damp problems and was given a copper covering, but now an application has been submitted to have the dome demolished. The local civic society want it to become "listed", but the 30 year rule doesn't come about until February 2007.
