Ground floor at the Guildhall
This is the scene which greets the visitor walking in from the street. The ground floor often has things going on during the day, such as dance classes or music. In this case, the Worcester Youth Orchestra is rehearsing for a concert. On the wall surrounding the balcony is a set of 19th century leather fire buckets.

Worcester Guildhall
Here Worcester Guildhall is decked out with bunting for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The superb Queen Anne building, begun in 1722 by Thomas White, a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren. White was badly paid for his efforts, and he died in poverty in 1738, bestowing the money he was owed on the Worcester Royal Infirmary. The city finally paid its debt in 1753.

Oak Apple Day in Worcester
Every year on Oak Apple Day, 29 May, Worcester the 'Faithful City' celebrates the day by decorating the entrance to the Guildhall with oak branches and leaves. Oak Apple day marks the birthday of Charles II in 1630 and his restoration to the throne in 1660. Worcester played a significant role in the English Civil War with the first skirmish in September 1642 taking place nearby at Powick Bridge and the final battle was in Worcester on 3 September 1651, from which Charles made his famous and epic escape.

Civil War celebrations at the Guildhall
Looking southwards along High Street by the gates of the Guildhall. This fellow was helping to promote an English Civil War exhibition. In 1651, Worcester was the site of the last battle of the war. Cromwell won the battle, but the city itself was fiercely loyal to King Charles. There is a small bust of Oliver Cromwell with his ears nailed to the wall to be found on the front face of the Guildhall, which was put in place some time after the restoration of the monarchy!
