The closed Arboretum public house (1), 53 Northfield Street, Worcester
This closed public house is on the corner of Northfield Street and East Street, in the inner city part of Worcester known as the Arboretum. It was recently advertised for sale or to rent as either a public house or other permitted use. As there is no estate agent's sign outside, and the boards showing the pub's name etc. have been removed, it is possible a deal has been concluded. The future use of the building is unknown. This is how the pub looked in July 2008, when presumably it was open:- Image Photograph by Philip Halling. Image

The closed Arboretum public house (2) - sign, 53 Northfield Street, Worcester
The pub's location is in the Arboretum district of Worcester and it took its name from this. In Victorian times a pleasure ground was opened in this area called the Arboretum. This only lasted from 1859 to 1866, after which the area was gradually developed for housing but the name Arboretum survived. On the sign are the figures of two women with a dog which looks like a poodle. Both women are in fairly modern dress, with hemlines which would have caused a major scandal in Victorian times, when even piano legs were often obscured with drapes. At the bottom of the sign, a name has been painted out. Probably it was the name of a brewery or pub chain who at one time owned the pub. The artist's name, Nigel Ash, is also on the sign. Image

Virk's Newsagents, 41 Northfield Street, Worcester
Located on the corner of Northfield Street and Washington Street, this is a newsagent, grocery store and off-licence. It is situated in the inner city area of Worcester known as the Arboretum. Next to it, in Washington Street, is a modern style telephone kiosk. An increasingly rare sight in secondary urban areas, now that mobile phones are so common.
