No.2 Mill on the left houses a 1800 horsepower cross compound mill engine built in 1925 and housed in the section with tall windows just in front of the chimney. Seeing this was a real 21st birthday treat.

A double mill still in use for making substitute grass. Mill No. 2 is on the left with its engine house containing a 1925 cross compound steam engine. Mill No. 1 is just seen on the right with its domed stair tower. The chimney is the only full height chimney with oversailing cap left in Leigh. The Bridgewater Canal is in the foreground.

This is a colour slide version of my earlier monochrome shot. Sometimes it seems I just wander round in circles using different cameras and progressively more "modern" media. I haven't taken the digital version of this yet, but I will if the demolition man doesn't beat me.

White Street and Leigh Spinners Mill
The mill is a very large double mill with the boiler house and chimney between Mills Nos. 1 and 2. This view just shows an end on view of No. 2 Mill with the chimney beyond. This is the best surviving mill complex in Leigh and also houses a large mill steam engine of 1800 horsepower that is now being restored.

Leigh Spinners, Leigh
Tufted carpet manufacturers. Two mills with a common boiler house and chimney. No. 2 closest to the camera houses a disused cross compound mill engine - the biggest of its type to survive. Is listed and attempts to remove it were foiled with the support of the International Stationary Steam Engine Society.
