St Mary's Church and Market Obelisk
The Grade II* listed https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1356221 St Mary's Church was built 1869-73 but conceals a 1516 tower. In the foreground is a Grade II listed https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1356219 obelisk, which was originally the market cross. It was restored in 1859, but placed on an original 17th century rusticated pedestal. The original cross, surmounted by a gilded sun, was still standing in 1798, and the earliest reference to a cross on this site is from 1649. It was moved 10 yards to the west of its original position to make way for widening of Leigh Road in October 1969.
