Colliery war memorial
With a missing plaque, poppies are the only clue.
Someone with local knowledge advises that it is a War Memorial for former Johnpit mine employees. A Google for "Johnpit" (the quote marks are essential to avoid pages relating to John Pitt) reveals: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/4984770
A Geograph moderator advises that it is shown on 1930s maps as a War Memorial.
