To help boaters up the 21 locks, which can be heavy going, British Waterways provide lock-keepers to assist by going on ahead and setting the locks. At the sixth lock up the Flight.

Wigan Lock No 80
Part of the Wigan Lock Flight.
Between Wigan Pier and the former Lancaster Canal there are 23 locks, they lift the canal up 214 feet 7 inches over about two and a half miles. This is the steepest part of the canal.

Down the Wigan Flight-27
The cottage beside lock 80 is the only other cottage apart from that at Top Lock still in existence. After lying neglected for many years it is now being restored.

Down the Wigan Flight-28
Canal bank housing was common down the flight, but this restored row between locks 80 and 81 are the only survivors.
