Mesnes Park, Wigan
Mesnes Park occupies a 12 hectare site immediately to the north-west of Wigan town centre.
The land had been meadow and pasture, but by 1847 supported two collieries. Wigan Corporation purchased the site after 1871 and it was opened as a public park in 1878. The park features number of Victorian park features including a bandstand, a pavilion and a Pulhamite rock feature.
Mesnes Park is currently undergoing a multi million pound restoration scheme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The park remains open to the general public whilst its facilities are being upgraded.

The Lucky Shoe
An ex-MP presides over the Park and Wigan legend has it that if you polish his shoe and walk three times around him, your wish will be granted. As you can see from the inset photo below, the superstition is proving a little wearing.
