Old milestone
On Barnsley Road in Hemsworth. This post has been painted since the photograph taken in 2012. The 5 and 6 mile posts now in South Yorkshire have the town names in full. The remaining posts on the way to Pontefract which are now in West Yorkshire have the town names abbreviated. The whole length of the road was in the West Riding but these posts probably predate the formation of the County Councils in the late 19C.

Old Milestone by Barnsley Road, Hemsworth
Metal plate attached to stone post by the UC road (was A628), in parish of Hemsworth (Wakefield District), Barnsley Road, Hemsworth, in front of Arundel, in pavement, 70cm from brick wall, on West side of road. Barn/Pont Grove iron casting, erected by the County Council in the 19th/20th century.
Inscription reads:-

Grade II listed.
