Normanton station - derelict land
There used to be extensive sidings on the north side of the station. They are long gone, and the topsoil piled in heaps suggests that redevelopment may be in the offing.

'Jubilee' Class 4-6-0 'Leander' at Normanton
The celebrated 'Jubilee' No. 45690, now preserved on the East Lancashire Railway, is seen in a disreputable state towards the end of its working life, on a Down Sheffield - Leeds local train leaving Normanton. This was then still a major junction, where the main ex-Midland Sheffield - Leeds line joined with the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire main line from Manchester via the Calder Valley and Wakefield, also the ex-North Eastern main line to York via Church Fenton. Until the 'Beeching Revolution' and the later disappearance of the Coal Industry, Normanton was a train-watcher's paradise but in 2010 the scene is totally different, the residual Normanton Station being virtually on a backwater. (See also Image] and Image]).

Normanton station - platform 1
A simple shelter is provided for passengers waiting for one of the two trains per hour that serve this station. It was welcome on this on this rather wet summer day. Meanwhile a train of containers passed eastwards through the station, see Image

Normanton station - island platform
Once a major railway junction Image, Normanton is now a simple unstaffed station on the line between Castleford and Wakefield, with a single island platform (two faces) served by just one train per hour each way on the Sheffield to Leeds service.

Normanton station - footbridge
Once a major railway junction Image, Normanton is now a simple unstaffed station on the line between Castleford and Wakefield, with a single island platform (two faces) served by just one train per hour each way on the Sheffield to Leeds service. This bridge, with steps and ramps, links the platform to Lower Station Road on the south side. It seems have replaced the function of the foot crossing seen in Image some time in the preceding nine years, see Image
